'Pacific Quest' - Port Hacking
During 2020, as part of a refurbishment of our boat 'Pacific Quest', built by Frank Attwell Boatshed at Burraneer Bay and launched in 1960 - Onboard Engineering, in conjunction with Shell Point Shipwrights, replaced both 85 HP Perkins Diesel motors and replaced them with two 85 HP Turbo Volvo Diesel Motors. This work was carried out very professionally and I am thrilled with the result which revitalised our 60 year old boat. It is running smooth now, and quiet efficiency has been a major factor with this refurbishment
Master - 'Masteka 2'
I would like to take this opportunity to commend the service of Onboard Engineering to any prospective clients. Our vessel has just completed our 6,000hr manufacturer-specified top-end rebuild for our two C32 1625 hp Caterpillar Main engines and two Onan generator rebuilds. The work was carried out with great care and attention to detail, further the team was fully cognisant of the need for the work area and vessel to be protected from damage or spills. The surrounding dock area was also kept clear of parts and equipment throughout the works. Andrew and Shannan and their team were approachable and diligent, always finding solutions for problems that arose, not to mention their adherence to vessel safety protocols in light of COVID. They were also able to help us with some other fabrication tasks around the vessel. My Engineer and i will continue to use Onboard Engineering going forward.
Being responsible for taking crew many miles out to sea game fishing, it is critical that I have confidence in the mechanic systems of my boat "Goliath". Having stepped up in size from a well-appointed recently re-powered modern engine 32' Cresta to an older 42 Bertram with 30 year old 450hp 6v92 Detroits, it's fair to say I had some concerns about the long-term serviceability and reliability of the engines in the new-old boat. Even though the engines seemed to be performing well, old electrical systems and less than ideal maintenance regiments by the previous owner meant that at the very least a major modernisation program was required. Once I had established that a rebuild (over a new engine re-power) was the better option in that only minor modifications to the Bertram's engine room were required, I began to research Detroit engine builders. There are many in Australia, however, the team at Onboard Engineering were consistently mentioned as the go-to team for Detroit builds. As luck would have it, Andrew Stubbs from Onboard Engineering had recently rebuilt the 6v92s in his own boat Triton, and having reviewed this work, a plan to rebuild Goliath's engines was hatched. The results of the rebuild are outstanding - largely because the fulsome approach in which Onboard Engineering conducted the re-power as well as the organised and professional manner in which the work was carried out. Engines, generators, fire systems, refrigeration, fuel systems, exhaust systems, shafts and seals, props, sea strainers and oil changing systems were either updated or installed. Mechanically, the vessel is brand new and without doubt, punches well above its already considerable weight. The team was very easy to deal with in all respects and unforeseen variations were discussed in advance to ensure I was aware of the situation and I was provided with regular updates. The final layout and configuration was considerably neater than the original engine installation and as a consequence, the serviceability has improved dramatically. Above all else, the biggest impression I have been left with is that the team take pride in the finished product and were as excited about the final result as I was - and having improved my cruising speed from 13.5 to 19.5 knots and top end from 20.9 to 27 knots, the boat has totally transformed. I AM VERY EXCITED!!! Above all else, the boat is now safe and reliable, and gives me the confidence that it can be used for its intended purpose. I strongly recommend Onboard Engineering to anyone who is looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and professional outfit to maintain or re-power their vessel.
Little Audrey Luxury Charters
After 30 odd years of owning numerous boats I have always found it difficult to find capable mechanics. Onboard Engineering were highly recommended to me by numerous members of the game fishing community. Since I have been with them I have found them to be extremely competent. Their staff are always well-presented and informative as to the procedures that they are undertaking. Lady and Little Audrey are both vessels which transverse the east coast from Bermagui in the south to Lizard Island in the north. We therefore require a company that has the expertise, personnel and commitment to attend my vessels wherever they may be. I have no hesitation in recommending Onboard Engineering to other boat owners. – www.littleaudrey.com.au
52’ Viking (Shelby)
I currently own a 52’ Viking (Shelby) based in Pittwater/Port Stephens NSW. Shelby is powered by Twin 1360Hp V12 Man and is used mainly for game fishing. The Onboard Engineering team has been servicing and maintaining the vessel for the past 5 years. The team has been professional, tidy and reliable at all times. The knowledge Onboard Engineering have when it comes to Vikings/Man engines is second to none. I would highly recommend the Onboard team as the best marine mechanical company to maintain your valuable vessel.
